Looking for Alaska

Author: John Green

Recommended age group: 15 years+

Description: Like a lot of the titles by this author, this deals with the gritty sad side of growing up and experiencing loss.  Based on his own experiences growing up, it shows how easy it is for your life to spiral out of control when you’re trying to explore who you are and where you belong.  It is a true account of teenage behaviours and reactions and nothing is sugar coated. It deals with losing and understanding and accepting that loss in your life. There is a wealth of materials provided online regarding this book that you can use as a discussion point with your child if you choose to use it as a learning tool. Warning: discussion of suicide, drug and alcohol use.
